Modelling Skeletal Muscle-Tendon Units as Actuators in Motor Behaviour: Morphological Aspects

چکیده

This paper discusses a number of morphological aspects of skeletal muscle and muscle-joint lever system that should be considered when modelling skeletal muscles as actuators of the bodies' motor system. It is recognised that, to implement muscle models in whole body models, these should be relatively simple. Thus, whenever possible, relatively simple algorithms are proposed that describe the major impacts of the morphological features of muscle on their mechanical behaviour. This way, it should be possible to model and describe the mechanical properties and behaviour of skeletal muscle in a more realistic way, without compromising the simplicity of models.

Muscle fiber and motor unit behavior in the longest human skeletal muscle.

The sartorius muscle is the longest muscle in the human body. It is strap-like, up to 600 mm in length, and contains five to seven neurovascular compartments, each with a neuromuscular endplate zone. Some of its fibers terminate intrafascicularly, whereas others may run the full length of the muscle. To assess the location and timing of activation within motor units of this long muscle, we reco...

A design concept of parallel elasticity extracted from biological muscles for engineered actuators.

Series elastic actuation that takes inspiration from biological muscle-tendon units has been extensively studied and used to address the challenges (e.g. energy efficiency, robustness) existing in purely stiff robots. However, there also exists another form of passive property in biological actuation, parallel elasticity within muscles themselves, and our knowledge of it is limited: for example...

Passive mechanical properties of human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units

Background The passive mechanical properties of skeletal muscletendon units are important because they determine the amount of motion available at joints. Human gastrocnemius muscle-tendon units are of particular interest because this muscle is prone to develop contractures, may have a role in lower limb overuse injuries, and is a common site of muscle tears. This workshop provides an introduct...

Are skeletal muscles independent actuators? Force transmission from soleus muscle in the cat.

It is unclear if skeletal muscles act mechanically as independent actuators. The purpose of the present study was to investigate force transmission from soleus (SO) muscle for physiological lengths as well as relative positions in the intact cat hindlimb. We hypothesized that force transmission from SO fibers will be affected by length changes of its two-joint synergists. Ankle plantar flexor m...
